Google Search and Siri Go Head-to-Head; Who Wins?

TechnoBuffalo performed an interesting comparison test between both an iPhone 4S running iOS 6 Beta 2 and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1 Jellybean with their voice assistants. Both of the operating systems are pre-release versions and they are the newest releases from both companies. The iPhone 4S uses Siri to answer the user’s questions and the Samsung Galaxy Nexus uses Google’s new Google Search.

As shown in the video, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus running Google’s Google Search voice service is much quicker – nearly lightning fast – in comparison to Apple’s Siri voice service for the iPhone 4S. Answers on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus are provided nearly immediately while the iPhone was still trying to load everything it needed to in order to answer the user’s question.

The big difference between the two is sacrificing either speed or cosmetic gorgeousness for the other. While the Samsung Galaxy Nexus has a faster response time for answering questions than Siri does, it’s not necessarily as nice looking as Siri is. Apple’s Siri has a beautiful and detailed look to it, while Google maintains their signature simplistic look with Google Search.

Another nice difference between the devices and their voice assistants is with how they are used. With the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, there is a button that can be tapped on the main screen to use the voice assistant. With the iPhone 4S, you have to painstakingly hold down on a physical button for a few seconds to open the voice assistant, which takes even longer. Taking this into account with the lightning-fast responses, the Samsung Galaxy Nexus offers a quicker response time with its voice assistant than the iPhone 4S as a whole. Some Jailbreak tweaks can be used to launch Siri in a similar way.

Google Search also seems to display a more helpful usefulness factor than Siri since it doesn’t ask the user if they want to search the Web for something when the user asks to see something specific, such as the French bulldog picture in the video, but instead shows the user exactly what they ask for. When the user goes to use a voice assistant, chances are that they are doing something where operating the phone could cause problems, like driving. Searching the Web in this instance is a no-go and having the assistant do all the work for you is crucial.

Voice control has an obvious footprint in the future of our mobile phones, so it's not going anywhere. The big question is: Which one do you go with?

Make Google Chrome Your Default iOS Browser With 'BrowserChooser'

Google Chrome for iOS was just released by Google yesterday. As it appears, Google Chrome for iOS didn’t just impress us, but it also impressed iOS hacker and developer Ryan Petrich. So much so, that he has created a free jailbreak tweak dubbed BrowserChooser that allows you to switch between default Web browser applications on your iOS device. Normally Mobile Safari is your device’s default Web browser – well, not anymore!

BrowserChooser can be used to set Google Chrome (or a different third party Web browser) as your default Web browser so that any links you tap on from anywhere in iOS will send you directly to your default Web browser instead of Mobile Safari – similarly to how you set a default Web browser on your personal computer. It places a preferences pane in your Settings application where you can choose between all of the Web browsers you have installed on your iOS device.

BrowserChooser is currently compatible with all of the following Web browsers for iOS:
  • Google Chrome
  • Opera Mini
  • iCab Mobile
  • Dolphine Browser
  • Atomic Browser
  • Diigo
  • iLunascape
  • MammothIV
  • Mercury
  • Mobile Safari

Being able to choose between default Web browsers is advantageous because you can ultimately select the user interface you want to use each and every time you open a Web page and you can avoid things you dislike about other browsers. Many people prefer Mobile Safari because of its speed, but browsers like Google Chrome for iOS offer other things that could outweigh speed such as tab syncing, nicer animations, and a simpler interface.

BrowserChooser is free, but you can only download it from Ryan Petrich's private repository. To add it, open Cydia and tap on Manage, then tap on Sources, then tap on Add, and type in the following repository URL:
PHP Code:
http://rpetri.ch/repo/
What's your opinion on Google Chrome now that you can set it as your default Web browser?

[GIVEAWAY] Safari Download Manager for iOS 5

Safari Download Manager was updated to include iOS 5 support yesterday and the developer, Dustin Howett, is celebrating by offering one lucky ModMyi reader a copy of the updated jailbreak tweak, a $5 value. If you don’t remember what Safari Download Manager does, it offers you the ability to download files from the internet directly from Mobile Safari with a beautiful user interface that looks like Apple just might have made it themselves. Check it out!

Safari Download Manager, once installed, puts a preferences pane in your Settings application where you can adjust its options. The main option is enabling and disabling the download feature, which is controlled with the toggle switch. After that, you can choose the kinds of file-types you can download and also choose how many simultaneous downloads you can have to help with bandwidth.

Once you find a file online you want to download, you can tap on the download button and Safari Download Manager will bring up its prompt showing you the file you are about to download, the path where it will be downloaded to, and offer you a download or cancel button so you can make sure you want to download it. Tapping download will begin the download process, which will show a screen with a progress bar, percentage indicator, and download speed. If you tap on the 'done' button to exit the download interface, the download will continue in the background and you will see a new button in Mobile Safari with a '1' on it to indicate that there is a download in progress. You can cancel any download at any time with Safari Download Manager.

When your download finishes, you can check the directory that you chose from Safari Download Manager with a file browser such as iFile to view the file that you downloaded. From here you can open the file, move it to Dropbox, or just save it there. You can delete it when you’re done with it.

Additional Information

Safari Download Manager works on every device on every firmware. It even works on iOS 6. iFile can be downloaded for free as an unlimited free trial with limited features and it works great with Safari Download Manager because it allows you to view and manage the files that you download. If you choose to buy all of the premium features of iFile (i.e. upgrade from the unlimited free trial), Purchasing Safari Download Manager will save you $2 on iFile.

Because Safari Download Manager has a great name for itself and it works so splendidly, we recommend Safari Download Manager for your mobile downloading needs. A big thanks to Dustin Howett for his hard work on the update!

Rumor: New iPad to Launch by Summer's End

According to a Chinese publication by the name of Apple Daily, a new iPad is to presumably launch by the end of summer. Based on what’s being said, the new iPad won’t be the long-rumored 7-inch iPad that many have been waiting for. The new iPad is supposed to feature a thinner design, a better battery, and a better display as well. The screen here is rumored to feature indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO) panel technology, which would be an improvement over the current display. Last but not least, Apple Daily reports that Apple will switch display manufacturers from Samsung to Sharp.

With the current iPad being introduced just a few months ago and given the suggested time of release, the rumor seems to be a hoax. Although having predicted some credible information in the past, the Chinese publications tend to have a spotty record when it comes to rumors and speculation and this is no different. It’s very unlikely from Apple to stray from their rather consistent release schedule of products and realistically releasing an iPad a few months after a refresh seems like it would be a very stupid idea.

If it was released, it would likely be released in September or October presumably alongside the next-generation iPhone. That being said, what do you think?

Best Tweaks of the Week 6/18 - 6/24

Here are the best jailbreak creations for the week of June 18th until June 24th as per the opinion of our staff. This is a weekly recap.

1. Deck HD - $1.99

Deck is a very popular jailbreak tweak for iPhone and iPod touch users by the iOS development team SBCoders, but an iPad version of the tweak was only recently released. With Deck HD, all of your system shortcuts, application shortcuts, and toggles are easily accessible right from a bar at the side of your screen that is invoked with an Activator action. In addition, the interface looks great, inspired by Apple’s linen ‘behind-the-scenes’ appearance and fluid animations. If you need a good toggles tweak for your iPad, Deck HD is the way to go.

2. MountainCenter - $2.99

MountainCenter is a new jailbreak tweak by iOS developers Jonas Gessner and iKy1e that adds another tweak to the Notification Center animations so that it acts more like Notification Center in OS X Mountain Lion, Apple’s next upcoming operating system for the Mac. MountainCenter is used by pulling from the side of the screen to launch Notification Center from behind the interface you’re in, where usually you have to pull from the status bar and Notification Center will come up above the interface you are already in. The animation is fluid and beautiful and works on all iOS 5 devices.

3. iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification Center - FREE

iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification Center by iOS developer Mathieu Hendey serves the purpose of mimicking the iOS 6 Twitter widget. While it looks almost the same, it doesn’t include Facebook functionality like the real iOS 6 version. The Twitter widget uses Twitter’s updated icon and when tapped, launches a text field for you to enter your Tweet and send it on its way to your Twitter feed. It uses iOS 5’s built-in Twitter integration, which is one reason why it doesn’t include the Facebook feature. Cosmetically, it does a good job of looking similar to the iOS 6 version and you can’t beat the free price tag.

4. SoundPad for Notification Center - FREE

SoundPad for Notification Center by iOS developer Mathieu Bolard is a great sound-mixing widget for Notification Center. It’s great because it’s eye candy, it’s free, and it keeps the children entertained for minutes on end. It has four buttons that allow you to record and play back sounds. This gives you four channels of sound to mix around for your entertainment. That’s all there is to it! Simple and fun.

5. StatusTint - FREE

StatusTint is a new free jailbreak tweak by Rudolf Lichtner that allows you to change the color of your status bar to just about any color you want. You can use a solid color or a gradient – the colors are chosen using two sets of RGB sliders and the color change works in both landscape and portrait mode. Changing the color of the status bar has become a popular demand ever since it was shown that the iOS 6 status bar changes colors automatically to match that of its surrounding user interface. The tweak is free, so if you like having your own customization options on your iOS device, you should grab this!

Deck Finally Comes to the iPad With 'Deck HD'

Deck was, and continues to be, a popular iPhone and iPod touch jailbreak tweak by iOS development team SBCoders that brought a myriad of application shortcuts, system toggles, and functional buttons to a ‘behind-the-scenes’ menu that could be accessed from the side of the screen with an Activator action. Right after its release, it was updated to bring even more cool stuff that continued to grab our attention apart from it's beautiful interface and simple design.

Today, an iPad-compatible version of the tweak, dubbed Deck HD, has been released, bringing the eye-candy interface and useful shortcuts and toggles to the large display that we all know and love. The iPad version comes with all of the same general toggles, the ability to add application shortcuts, and it has those useful system shortcuts just like the iPhone version, so you can check out that review (linked above) to see what Deck HD can do for you.

Since Deck HD is optimized for the iPad, it opens and closes fluently. You can use any Activator action that you like – it is recommended that you choose swipe left on status bar because performing the gesture will closely match the momentum of Deck HD opening up on the side of your screen. As it opens, everything is dimmed out of focus except for the Deck interface. It works from the home screen, within applications, and even on the lock screen.

All of your shortcuts and buttons can be customized from the preferences pane after you install Deck HD. This allows you to make the interface as useful as you want it. It’s a very useful jailbreak tweak for iPad owners and it is recommended if you don’t already have a good toggle platform on your jailbroken iPad.

If you own Deck already, Deck HD is a separate purchase.

'MountainCenter' Makes Notification Center for iOS React Like OS X Mountain Lion

Notification Center is a popular part of iOS to change animations for. Tweaks like Flowtation, Zephyr, and WeeRoll all add their own animation settings that make Notification Center appear to open differently than Apple wanted it to. Today, another jailbreak tweak is joining the race in Notification Center animations. Say, "hi" to MountainCenter by iOS developers Jonas Gessner and iKy1e.

MountainCenter is called what it is because it takes the animation from OS X Mountain Lion (Apple’s upcoming new Mac operating system) and adds the animation to the iOS version of Notification Center. To use it, you just place your finger on the right side of the screen and pull toward the left to reveal Notification Center. If you're worried about this conflicting with other things or causing issues with application functions, you can change some settings around from the MountainCenter preferences pane that makes its way into the Settings application after the install:

The first thing you see is a switch that enables and disables the tweak on demand. After this, you will find the ability to set how many fingers you want to use to reveal Notification Center. This is the feature that will keep you from accidentally launching Notification Center when you don’t want to. You can use anywhere from one to five fingers to perform the action.

Right under the finger settings, you can choose to use the left or the right side of the screen, which is good if you are more comfortable using one hand instead of another. You can also adjust the sensitivity to the gesture to be either low, medium, or high – changing this will make Notification Center either easier or harder to open, which can help keep you from accidentally opening Notification Center when you don't mean to. The keyboard disables switch will keep the gestures from being recognized when you have a keyboard opened up.

If you are using MountainCetner on an iPad (Yes! It's also iPad compatible!), you will also see the option to have full-screen banners. This feature will fill the screen with the banner notifications instead of just being a tiny, iPhone-sized banner on the large iPad display.

Mountain Center is very fluid in its animations and it includes a nice drop shadow that follows your finger as you pull Notification Center out from under the interface you are in. It works from applications and from the home screen. You can also pull in the reverse direction that you opened Notification Center from to close Notification Center and the animation will be existent there too.

MountainCenter is great aesthetic add-on for iOS, so if you like changing the way things act or look, it’s definitely a high-quality tweak to look into.

How to Get An iOS 6 Style Twitter Widget On Your iOS 5 Device

One feature of iOS 6 that stands out is the new widget that includes a tap to Tweet (Twitter) and tap to Post (Facebook) functionality. If you want this feature on your jailbroken iOS 5 device, you can do so now with a new free jailbreak widget called iOS 6 Twitter Widget for Notification Center by iOS developer Mathieu Hendey.

The widget was made to mimic the appearance of the iOS 6 widget, however it is made only for Twitter as iOS 5 doesn’t come with Facebook integration – because of this, the widget spans completely across Notification Center with only Twitter in mind. Another noticeable difference between this mockup and the real thing is that iOS 6 uses Twitter’s old logo and this jailbreak widget for iOS 5 uses Twitter’s new logo.

When you tap on the widget from Notification Center, it will bring up the familiar iOS 5 Tweeting prompt that we all know and love. The widget relies directly on iOS 5’s Twitter integration, so as soon as you tap Send, the Tweet will appear in your Twitter feed:

You will need to have iOS 5 installed to use this widget since it requires both Notification Center and Twitter integration to function. You can enable or disable the widget on demand by dragging it in and out of Notification Center from the Notifications preferences pane in the Settings application.

If you are out to make your iOS 5 device look like an iOS 6 device, this widget is worth installing. You could also take a look at how to get the iOS 6 photo sharing menu on your jailbroken iOS 5 device to add to the fun!

'SoundPad for Notification Center' Is A New Sound Mixing Widget

If you like playing with sounds to make beats, then there is a new free jailbreak widget available in Cydia right now called SoundPad for Notification Center by iOS developer Mathieu Bolard. With it, you can play around with up to four channels of sound at once right from your Notification Center.

The widget keeps everything nice and tidy; it has a very clean and simplistic design, which is a great quality to have. The widget retains Apple’s default widget size, and it only has four centered buttons that each look the same and do the same thing as the other buttons, but this is because they are for sound-mixing. If you scroll over to the right, you will find the developer's Twitter in a shortcut with the Twitter button and a PayPal donation button so that you can give the developer a donation if you like the widget. It also shows you brief instructions for using the widget.

At first, all widget buttons will be gray and have a play icon in them. The first thing you will need to do is record a sound. To do this, you must hold down on the button – during this time, the button will turn red and show a stop icon in it. Tapping on the button in this event will stop the recording. After you do so, the button will turn gray with a play button inside of it again and you can tap on it to play the sound you just recorded – during this time, the button will turn green with a volume icon inside and you will hear the sound coming from your external speaker or headphones if you are using them.

With four separate buttons capable of working all at the same time, you can have up to four channels of sound in your little, homemade beat. You can record and play sound with more than one button at once, but there is no way to actually save the sound mixes that you make.

The widget can be enabled or disabled at any time by simply dragging it in and out of Notification Center from the Notifications preferences pane in the Settings application. The widget was designed to offer some temporary entertainment to its users. Due to it having a good design, a working interface, and even being free, I would say this widget is worth installing.

There is a bug with the BigBoss version of the tweak that was released just today. If you have issues getting the tweak to work from the BigBoss repository, you can download the updated version from Mathieu’s private repo (version 0.0.4-2). It will work as intended. His private repo is shown below:

PHP Code:
http://repo.mathieubolard.com/
Be sure to give this widget a try if you like playing with sounds. It is certainly a fun widget that will keep the kids busy.

Note: The developer will update the BigBoss version with his private repository version when he is absolutely sure that all bugs are gone. It shouldn't take too long!

Colorize Your Status Bar With 'StatusTint'

We have already discovered iOS 6 to have a versatile status bar that changes colors to match the surrounding UI (user interface). Unfortunately, if you’re jailbroken on iOS 5 like most people here are, then you are stuck between the boring black and gray status bars. If you don’t want to be, then a new jailbreak tweak called StatusTint by iOS developer Rudolf Lichtner will give you the ability to change your status bar’s colors.

The tweak is enabled or disabled right from the Settings application in the StatusTint preferences pane. You can also choose between having a gradient status bar, which means two colors (shown above), and using one solid color for your status bar. For whichever you choose to have, you will find two RGB sliders in the preferences pane to select your colors. The preferences pane is shown below:

Having the RGB sliders gives you a very broad range of possible color selections, unfortunately it also means having to guess what color you are choosing since they offer no indication of what color you are currently sitting on. It is also recommended that you respring the device after you make a change to the settings so that they will take effect.

The issue with the landscape status bar not appearing correctly has been resolved in another release of SatatusTint from Rudolf's private repository. It will be updated in the ModMyi repository shortly with the same update.

If you are interested in trying the tweak before it goes live on any public repositories, you can add Rudolf's repository and download the tweak for free to give it a try. His repository is shown below:

Add iOS 6 Photo menu to iOS 5 [Video]

Apple introduced iOS 6 with more than 200 new features, one of them was the Facebook Integration and complete new photo sharing menu. This new menu provides a complete new user interface that looks pretty awesome. But as we know that iOS6 is currently for developers only, so if you aren’t a developer but want to get rid of that old irritating menu in iOS on your iPhone, here’s a solution for you. A brand new tweak has been releases in Cydia store called “iOS 6 Photos Menu” to do this task for you.
iOS 6 Photos Menu work on any device running iOS 5 and higher, the even better thing about this app is it will add some extra sharing buttons which will not be included in stock iOS 6 firmware such as Google Plus, Mail, and messages options. However, according to iDB, these sharing options will not perfectly work on iPod Touch 4G, but everything works smoothly on iPhone.
This tweak is now available in Cydia for absolutely free of cost. Go now, and give it a try ;)

Having trouble downgrading iPhone 3GS Baseband From 06.15.00?? Next update Will Be Released Next Weak (Thursday)- Muscle Nerd

Earlier this week, the iPhone Dev-Team announced the release of updated Redsn0w that allowed iPhone3GS and iPhone3G users to downgrade their baseband from that of iPad's 6.15.00 to 5.13.04 allowing them to unlock their device using ultrasn0w and getting back the GPS for iPhone3GS users. Redsn0w worked for some but many users faced difficulties in downgrading the baseband. Even after the process completes the baseband for a majority of people was still 6.15 which indicates that Redsn0w actually din't downgrade the baseband to 5.13.04.

Many troubleshooting methods were discussed but eventually there wasn't any optimum solution available to downgrade the 6.15 baseband. Senior members of iPhone Dev-Team even suggested of performing a fresh restore and then reflashing of 6.15 baseband and then attempt to downgrade. This did not help either.

Musclenerd Confirms Redsnow Update

Musclenerd today announced on twitter that he has discovered the reason for baseband downgrade failure in many iPhone3GS. According to him, the reason for failure of baseband downgrade is because of variation in NOR chip which can be changed to handle the differences between the NOR chips. There are altogether 3 types of NOR. Two are very similar and the third one is entirely different which was left out in the Redsn0w. Lastly Musclenerd clearly mentioned that he needs a loaner iPhone3GS which he'll be getting by Thursday and once the testing is done, a redsn0w update will be pushed that will allow all iPhone3GS users to downgrade their baseband without any errors. Hopefully by the end of next week every iPhone with 6.15 baseband will be successfully downgraded.
